Johanna Herolt (painter/draughtsman; German; Female; 1668 - 1723)

Painter and draughtsman; born in Amsterdam, died in Surinam/Amsterdam. Eldest daughter of the artists, Maria Sibylla Merian (q.v) and Johann Andreas Graff (q.v). Trained under her mother. Married in 1692 Jacob Hendrik Herolt, a merchant who traded with Surinam. She worked closely with her mother on the watercolours of plants and insects which were later published as a set of coloured engravings, 'Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium' (1705). Moved to Surinam in 1711 with her husband, who became director of the orphanage in Paramaribo, and she died in Surinam.
