Federico da Montefeltro, Count then Duke of Urbino, condottiere and Papal Gonfalonier. He was a great patron of the arts. His second wife Battista Sforza (q.v), had several daughters and one son Guidobaldo (q.v) who is mentioned in Castiglione's 'The Courtier' in the palace of Urbino. Federico lost his right eye in a tournament, and had part of the bridge of his nose removed to enable him to see better with his left eye, subsequently in portraits he is shown from the left profile.
