Biography

Painter of portraits, historical and fancy pictures, and of half-naked women. Trained in Dublin under Rober West, to Italy 1762-5. Settled in London in 1765, where he studied under Hudson. Second visit to France and Italy 1772-6. Exh. RA 1769-85; ARA 1771; elected RA 1777. Ordained 1782, became Chaplain to the Prince of Wales, resigned from RA in 1788, but continued to paint large historical pictures for Boydell et al.
