- Biography
- History and portrait painter. Son of engraver John Pine (qv, 1690-1756). b. 1730 (not 1733), exh. RA 1772, 1780 and 1784. 1772-80 living in Bath. He was one of the first to paint portraits of actors in character parts and some of his best portraits were engraved in mezzotint by Dickinson or in line by François Aliamet. Strong supporter of the American republicans, and emigrated to America in 1784, settling in Philadelphia, where he was assisted by Charles Willson Peale.
