The foothills on the Kenyan side of the extinct volcano Mount Elgon contain many caves and rock shelters. Two of these contain paintings of cattle, rare in Kenya. In 1960 Richard Wright investigated a cave found by a Mrs. Tweedie in the Kimothon forest, where cattle depictions he compared with some in Ethiopia were visible despite water damage. This cave is now known as Kiptogot cave, about 50m long and 10m high, with the paintings suffering from water damage. Also in the area are two further cattle painting sites, at Chemarich Cave and Kiboi/Kiboy, investigated in 2003 by Emmanuel Ndiema and recorded by the Trust for African Rock Art. Several of the shelters and adjacent caves show evidence of occupation and Kiptogot was excavated by a team from the University of Glasgow in 2014.
