the beauty holds up perhaps a chopstick and a small dish in the light of the lamp to cast against the wall the shadow of a boatman with his wide hat and pole. The painting of the cockerel on the cupboard door alludes to the fact that 1765 was the year of the bird. Several of Haranobu's contemporaries such as Toyonobu also immediately experimented with the new full-colour technology; though producing far fewer designs. 'Tokki', the name which appears prominently halfway up the left side of the print, was the amateur 'haiku' poet who conceived the idea for the design, then worked up by Toyonobu. No other examples commissioned by Tokki are currently known. (Label copy, TTC 1997)
