    Mori Shuho has been considerably overshadowed by his younger brother, Mori Sosen (1913, 0501, 0531), and certainly he did not follow the same path of narrow individuality. Instead of rebelling against the dull conventionalities of the Kano school, which was virtually the only thorough teaching in ink-painting method available until late in the eighteenth century, he tried to use its best points in a fresh way, tending towards a pleasing freedom and lightness of brushwork admired among the Osaka educated bourgeoisie which was his milieu. In this light-hearted screen he takes an old Kano subject of running horses done in ink and wash (itself derived from much earlier Chinese originals) and recreates it with a most pleasing understated deftness of touch and an unerring placement of the subject in a suggestive space. The screen has been remounted and its proportions altered at one point in their history, but their condition is otherwise pristine.
