    Smith 1994
Hagiwara's work in woodblocks is more varied than that of most of his contemporaries, and has explored different styles and techniques with varying success. His most acclaimed prints have been those of the late 1950s and early 60s when he achieved great density of tone and texture in dark or intense colours. This was seen most notably in his series of 'Yoroeru hito' (Man in Armour), but 'Stone Flower: Blue' is of the same period and of equal strength. The effect is realised principally through his printing the back of the paper first with one dark dye which is rubbed through to the front of the sheet with great vigour. This provides a rich background for further printing, with an already varied surface with much texture. According to Petit (1973, Descriptive List of Plates, no. 49), there were four blocks of plywood faced with 'shina' and eleven printing stages for the surface, but this was for a 'polychrome version' of the print which included poster colour, and not the blue version reproduced here.
