  • Curator's comments

The print belongs to a group of twenty-four 'Prophets' and twelve 'Sibyls' executed in a style called by Hind the 'Fine Manner' and now attributed to Baccio Baldini. No difference of states is known for the series of 'Sibyls' (for this set see the entry for Hind C.I.12.B.I: P&D 1895-9-15-54). The figure is a modified copy of 'St Thomas' from the series of engravings of the 'Apostles' by the German Master E.S. (for a reproduction see 'The Illustrated Bartsch', vol. 23, p. 58). Other impressions are in Berlin, Bologna (Pinacoteca Nazionale), in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and in the Rothschild collection (Louvre, Paris).
