  • Curator's comments

The present engraving belongs to the so-called 'Otto Prints'; for this group see the commentary to Hind, A.IV.2 (1852-3-1-3). The three groups of animals hunting appear in reverse in an almost coeval 'Pattern plate of Beast and Bird' (Hind, A.II.2) and in a drawing in the so-called 'Florentine Picture-Chronicle', an album of pen-and-ink drawings in the BM, now believed to be the the product of Baldini's studio (f. 12; see B. Degenhart, A. Schmitt, 'Corpus der italienischen Zeichnungen 1300-1450, Teil I: Sud-und Mittelitalien, 4 vols, Berlin, 1968, pl. 392). They must all depend on a common source, probably a pattern book. As Hind suggested, the coats-of- arms are left blank so that those of the donor or recipient of the print could be added by hand. Another impressions is in the Rothschild Collection (Louvre, Paris).

Evans bought these other 8 lots on his own account, and offered them as a group to the BM for £200. Provenance: Baron Philippe de Stosch (1731-1757); Wilhelm Muzel; Ernst Peter Otto (Leipzig, 1783); Klauss Otto (Leipzig, Weigel, 1852).
