  • Curator's comments

The present engraving belongs to the so-called 'Otto Prints'; for this group see the commentary to Hind, A.IV.2 (1852,0301.3). The border is similar to that of Hind, A.IV.12; as Hind supposed, the subject might be derived from a northern picture; indeed, in an entry of the inventory of the collection of Lorenzo de Medici (1492) is recorded "uno panno franzese dipintovi uno grasso che suona il liuto [...]" (a French panel painting of a fat man playing a lute). As Zucker noted (in 'The Illustrated Bartsch, Commentary', vol. 24, part 1, 1993, p. 148, no. 031), in style and execution, this engraving is one of the most attractive of the group, especially the encircling wreath of fruit and plants that may be compared with the border decoration of Ghiberti's 'Gates of Paradise' (Baptistery, Florence), or with the border decoration of Luca della Robbia's Federigi Tomb (Santa Trinita', Florence, 1454-7). The print's underlying theme is probably an amorous one, although given here a comic twist.
