The following label was written by Kim Sloan for Places of the Mind, 2017:
In the 1890s, after a series of watercolour exhibitions by Whistler and an introduction to the work of the Impressionists, the ‘New Critics’ demonstrated a preference for a less laboured-looking watercolour. Brabazon was an amateur artist who travelled widely, drawing on the spot, often in the footsteps of Turner. He was known to Ruskin and Sargent and in 1891, at the age of 70, he exhibited two works at the New English Art Club for the first time and held a one man-exhibition the following year. His ‘vigorous handling’ and ‘sensitive sprightly impressionism’ drew huge critical acclaim.
