    Label text from 2008-9 Sept.-Jan BM, British Sculptors' Drawings
    This is a famous and much exhibited drawing, and was given to the British Museum by Lord Clark, the author and narrator of the famous television series 'Civilisation', when he was serving as a Trustee. It derives from a sheet with six ideas for a similar composition, into which Moore set one of his existing sculptures. None of his sculptures, however, corresponds to the figure in this worked-up drawing.

    The following label was written by Kim Sloan for Places of the Mind, 2017:
    Just as the megalithic monuments at Avebury stimulated Paul Nash’s thinking about making ‘an ordered intrusion’ in the landscape and led him to create some of his most surreal pictures of the 1930s, they were also a touchstone for Henry Moore. An earlier drawing from 1936, of a landscape with two imaginary standing forms, is in the cases opposite – by the 1940s, as here, the rocks had become the settings for sculptures inspired by the figures in his Shelter Sketchbooks.
