- Label text (added 2003): Rodolphe Julian is best known for the Academy he founded in 1873 which provided training for the École des Beaux-Arts and for the Salon. Its enormous popularity forced him to abandon painting and concentrate on teaching and administration. His work had previously been shown at the Salon des Refusés in 1863 and at the Salon from 1865. The present study was formerly in the collection of Léon Cogniet, Julian's first teacher.
Julian's interest in wrestling led to his being asked to provide illustrations for Léon Cladel's novel about a Roman gladiator, 'Ompdrailles, le tombeau des lutteurs', 1879 and although none of them correspond to this drawing, it is possible that it dates from around this period.
