    Schnorr's association with England dates to the period that he spent in Rome from 1817 - 1827, when he met Charles Eastlake (1793-1865) who was later president of the Royal Academy, and made friends with Christian Carl von Bunsen (1791-1860) who was later Prussian ambassador in London. The popularity of Schnorr's 'Picture Bible' which was published in Leipzig in thirty parts between 1852 and 1860, and of which an English edition was published in 1861, was also instrumental in securing Schnorr's commission for St Paul's in London. The commission was given to the artist in 1861 by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths for seven coloured designs for glass windows in the cathedral. There is a full-scale cartoon in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich for the window relating to this design, which seems never to have been executed. Four windows were made in Munich and installed; of which three in the choir were removed in 1888, and one in the main west window, showing 'The Conversion of St. Paul' (preparatory drawing in the Victoria and Albert Museum) remained, but was destroyed in 1941 during an air raid (see Keith Andrews, 'The Nazarenes', Oxford, 1964, pp. 124-5). The old backing of this drawing is inscribed in pencil: 'No.4/' Aus Sammlung /Prinz Joh.[ann] G[eorg] v[on] Sachsen / Julius Schnorr von Karolsfeld'.
