    The painting to which this drawing relates was bequeathed to the National Gallery by Lord Cheylesmore in 1902 and was transferred from the Tate to the National Gallery in 1973. See dossier for paper on the production of the painting by J Kirby and A Roy (Symposium at University of Leiden, 1995).

    This item has an uncertain or incomplete provenance for the years 1933-45. The British Museum welcomes information and assistance in the investigation and clarification of the provenance of all works during that era. The drawing was presented to the National Gallery by Le Roy Burket in 1985 and transferred to the British Museum in 1994. There is an artist's studio stamp? 'HD' in the bottom right corner of sheet.
