- This is the frontispiece to an album with 53 drawings by Cornelis de Wael. For the complete album see 1836,0811.614-667 (1836,0811.625 has been omitted). This frontispiece was most likely not drawn by Cornelis de Wael himself, but maybe by one of his contemporaries who got hold of this set of drawings.
The album is bound in brown leather with gold tooling on the spine, containing 48 numbered drawings and a frontispiece, all pasted on blue paper. There are four additional drawings inserted at the end of the album (1836,0811.664-667), of which the last two also contain sketches on the verso. Most drawings show genre subjects such as scenes with soldiers, travellers, peasants, a market etc. They are executed in pen and brown ink, occasionally with brown or grey wash; one drawing in pen and blue ink with blue wash and another in brush and brown wash.
