Watermark: 'H' surmounted by a cross. See Popham, 'Catalogue of the Drawings of Parmigianino', Cambridge, 1971, No.257.

Bambach, Chapman, Clayton & Goldner 2000
The drawing is inspired by an episode in Ovid's 'Fasti': Priapus, a fertility god with an unnaturally large phallus, was on the point of ravishing the sleeping nymph Lotis, but was thwarted because his victim was woken by the braying of Silenus's ass and fled his advances. This is one of a number of erotic drawings that Parmigianino made in the last decade of his life, some of which have been similarly censored by later owners. Some of these erotic drawings are rough sketches and may have been drawn for the artist's own amusement, while others, such as the present one, are more finished and might well have been drawn specifically for sale or for presentation to patrons such as Francesco Baiardo, for whom Parmigianino painted the distinctly homoerotic 'Cupid' now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
