This beautiful sheet was attributed to Jan Brueghel by Hind.
Christiaan van Eeghen included this sheet in the Festschrift for Voûte and linked it to another in his own collection (once in the H.E. ten Cate collection) traditionally attributed to Van de Cappelle. He describes its similarities to Cappelle's painted winter landscapes and skating scenes; for example in the Fondation Custodia, Paris, inv.no.528 and the Mauritshuis, The Hague, inv.no.567 (both dated in the early 1650s). Similar drawings with winter landscapes can also be found in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, inv.no.2425 and in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg, inv.no.21790.
The cottages in the background are copied from an etching by Esaias van de Velde (Keyes E13; Hollstein 21; wanting in the BM); for an anonymous copy see S.6918.

Literature: D. Hannema, 'Catalogue of the H.E. Ten Cate Collection', Rotterdam, 1955, p.115, cat.no.191; 'M. Russell, 'Jan van de Cappelle', Leigh-on-Sea, 1974, pp.32-35, fig.44a; C.P. van Eeghen, 'Tekeningen van Jan van de Cappelle nader bezien', in Album Amicorum to Mr J.R. Voûte, 1989, no pp; J. Bolten and A.T. Folmer-von Oven, 'Liberna Foundation: Catalogue of Drawings', Hilversum, 1989, cat.no.43.
