- Curator's comments
- At the date of this print, d'Eon had been living in London as a woman for six years and had maintained a level of celebrity which assured continued public interest in portraits of the Chevalier. D'Eon deprived of former income from amassadorial funds, but accustomed to an expensive lifestyle, had found other ways to make ends meet. Fencing demonstrations brought d'Eon an element of fame, especially the match against Monseiur St-George at Carlton House 9 April 1787. However, by 1791 d'Eon was again short of funds and, on 5 May, an auction of their goods was held at Christie's (see D,1.268-272 for d'Eon's visiting card drawing attention to the forthcoming sale).
As in other portraits of this period, d'Eon is shown in a dark gown, with a lace headdress, a lace shawl and the Cross of St-Louis prominently displayed. For the portrait profile drawn from life in 1793 by George Dance, in which d'Eon wears a very similar costume, see 1898,0712.19.
