- The Museum has four works by Tokuda Yasokichi III, with that entitled 'Dawn' being one of the most popular in the Mitsubishi Corporation Japanese Galleries. After Yasokichi III died in 2009, his daughter succeeded him and took the name Yasokichi IV in 2010. She is one of the very few female heads of a traditional potting lineage in Japan. She works with her father's and her great-grandfather's glaze recipes but adds her own interpretation to the works. She continues to develop her father's trademark saiyu glaze, which makes use of coloured glazes in various gradations, as well as working with just cobalt blue glaze. The name of the work clearly reflects the artist's feeling that she is coming into her own. This work inverts the flowing blue glaze that her father used as one of his hallmarks, by channelling the colour flow from the bottom of the bowl towards the rim. It is one of her largest works; she herself applies the glaze colourants but she has eight ceramics specialists working with her, whom she inherited from her father. The ceramic, while clearly modern, is still very much in the traditional Kutani style that was a hallmark of Kaga domain in the later Edo period (1615-1868).
Her work is in the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art and in the Indianapolis Museum of Art. (NCR, Oct 2014)
