  • Curator's comments

    (P. Attwood, ‘A Group of Drawings by Leonard Wyon’, ‘The Medal’, no.31, 1997, (20)):

'The subject is identified in the index [and handwritten supplementary list, both accompanying the album] as Mr W.D. Haggard, who was, according to the supplementary list, the father of Fred Haggard. William Debonaire Haggard (1785/6-1866) worked at the Bank of England from 1805, and was principle of its Bullion Office from 1833 to 1856; his collection of coins was purchased by the Bank in 1854. There is a lithograph portrait of him of 1836 in the Bank. Fred Haggard, who, with his wife, was in Leonard Wyon's circle of friends, and is often mentioned at social occasions in his diary, administered Wyon's investments.'

One of a group of 71 portrait drawings (2012, 7076.1-71). 42 of these are loose and 29 are pasted into an album, of which this is one. It is mounted on page 11. For full description and comment see 2012, 7076.1.
