  • Curator's comments

These works illustrate the social, political and economic conditions of 1930s China. As China and Japan moved closer to war, millions lost their livelihood or migrated; families were separated; daily life disintegrated.

Shanghai represented a very different society, of worldly glamour, sophistication and luxury.

Jack Chen (Chen Yifan 陈依范, 1908-97) , journalist and cartoonist, collected this material in late 1930s China. He exhibited it in New York, London and other wartime capitals, to support the anti-Fascist movement and raise support for China's wartime situation. It remained in Amsterdam after being exhibited in 1939. In 1955, another exhibition was held in Amsterdam, and the collection was given to the curator of that event. The British Museum acquired it in Amsterdam in 2009, through the offices of Stefan Landsberger and Marien van der Heijden.
