    Hillier and Smith 1980

It is probably true to say that Hokusai's reputation in the West was made by this endlessly inventive series of picture-books, thirteen volumes of which were published during his lifetime.

    Literature:
Hillier, J, 'The Art of Hokusai in Book Illustration', London, 1980, ch. 8.
The finest western tribute is Michener, James, 'The Hokusai Sketchbooks: Selections from the Manga', Rutland (Vt.) and Tokyo, 1958.
