        Lettered above image with title and below with line of latin: "Falleris, hâc qui te pingi sub imagine credis; Non similis Judas est tibi; pænituit" and publication line: "Sold by John Morphen near Stationer's Hall; Wm Gardiner a Linnen Draper in Whitechappel High Street and the Print-Sellers of London and Westminster. Price One Shilling"
  • Curator's comments

    The altarpiece was commissioned by Dr Richard Welton, rector of Whitechapel in 1714 and portrays White Kennet, later Bishop of Peterborough, as Judas. Many pamphlets appeared on the subject and the chancellor of the diocese eventually ordered that the painting be taken down.
