  • Curator's comments

(Description and comment from M.Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', V, 1935)
Probably the incident during the encounter of the 'Bon Homme Richard' with the 'Serapis', when a gunner shouted for quarter till Jones knocked him down with the butt of a pistol.
In the manner of history rather than satire, and tending to the glorification of Jones, see BMSat 5559, &c.
One of Bowles's series of mezzotints.
Also a coloured impression in 'Caricatures', B.M.L., Tab. 524, i, p. 7, from which the publication line has been supplied.
