  • Curator's comments

    The identity of the model is uncertain. David Mannings proposes that the painting was exhibited in 1785 as 'A Little Girl', at which time Theophilia Gwatkin would have been three. There are similarities with the facial features of Lady Anne Spencer, but the painting would date from the mid to late 1770s if she were the model. (See Mannings, no. 2008, p.507-8).
