  • Curator's comments

There is a copy in reverse by Pieter Schenk (Hollsetin 432), a version attributed to Beckett in the same direction but with modifiations in the background which was republished by Smith (2010,7081.138) and a similar print by Francis Place (2010,7081.240). Ganz also notes that there are two unsigned versions in reverse in the BN (Cd. 6 fol. 95-6, no.s 102-3) and a different version of the subject by Jacob Gole (1850,1109.56).
The impression in New York is annotated with the date 1685.

States [recorded by Ganz (i-ii); Christopher Lennox-Boyd/Nicholas Stogdon (iii-iv)]
    (i) lettered '[monogram] MLoroone pinx: // I Smith fec:'
    (ii) Smith's production line removed
(iii) reworked; the highlights on the monk's knee quite different and left eyebrow raised
(iv) vertical scratches on the plate, through the book; these impressions were probably issued in 1809 and 1822.
Wessely describes the print as lettered 'M Loroone pinx. // A Lady at Confession. // J. Smith fecit. 1691'. Presumably Wessely conflated information on different prints of similar subject. The description and size of W.452 are correct for this plate, as is the artist's name, but not Smith's; the title Wessely gives actually belongs to W.442 (information supplied by Nicholas Stogdon, via email May 2014).
The print is listed in Walter Shropshire's 'Catalogue of a ... Collection of Prints', London 1770, lot 324, priced 7s. 6d.

Other impressions: Paris BN (i), annotated 1685; Edinburgh (ii); Glasgow Hunterian (ii); Haddington albums (i); London NPG (ii); New York PL (i); CLB (i, 2 impressions of ii, iii, iv, on wove paper)
