Lettered with 'production detail' (see comment): 'Pint par le Comte Cagliosto - gravé par Chenon père', title, followed by inscription in French, and quotation in Latin.
  • Curator's comments

There is no 'Chenon père'; the engraver, an anonymous artist, jokingly signed 'Chenon', an allusion to Pierre Chenon, then commissaire (=superintendant of police) at the Châtelet. In a similar fashion, he attributed the design to 'Comte Cagliostro', aka Giuseppe Balsamo, the Italian alchemist who was briefly emprisoned in the Bastille (governed by De Launay) following the Affair of the Necklace
