  • Description

Yellow/brown with black dendritic inclusions quartz chalcedony cylinder seal; a mouflon, approaches from the left, turns its head back towards a cross above its back that has arms of equal length that end in V-shapes, and places one foot on a wreath of palmettes, which surrounds the nine-leaf palmette crown and upper part of a volute tree. The stem of the tree rises from a base of two rings from which two serrated sepals curve outward. In the upper field are an eight-pointed star and a crescent. A tripartite plant with serrated leaves stands below the mouflon’s raised leg, and a star-shaped blossom appears between the second foreleg and a hind-leg.

Matthews (1990, p. 141) attributes this seal to the reign of Shalmaneser I (1273-1244 BC). He refers to the tree’s outer garland which is also found on Third Kassite seals, but does not consider that it derives from the Second Kassite style (as suggested in Trokay 1991) because the garland is not independent, as here (p. 64 n. 97, with parallels on his nos 329, 414, 424, 425 and 493), and he suggests (p. 92 n. 43) that this may by a feature described in an inventory published by Köcher 1957-8, Col. 1, 1-16). He also cites this seal (p. 94) as an example of a single animal approaching a tree that is “not on a hill”. For the distinctive material, see the discussion in connection with MA6 BM 102507. [DC]
