  • Curator's comments

This is one of two prints that Altdorfer made as a record of the thirteenth-century synagogue in Regensburg, just prior to its destruction on 21 February 1519. The persecution of the Jewish community in Regensburg had started following the death the previous month of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian, who was known for his religious tolerance. The relatively new medium of etching - for which Altdorfer is best known for his suite of nine landscapes (Hollstein 84-92) - may have been chosen because of the need to quickly produce printed records of the event. See David Landau and Peter Parshall, 'Renaissance Print', New Haven & London 1994, pp. 337-39.
Literature: F. Winzinger, 'Altdorfer Graphik', Munich 1963, no.174.
