Lit: G. Bartrum, 'Albrecht Dürer and his Legacy', exh. cat. BM 2002, no. 188 (entry reproduced below).

'This is one of Altdorfer's nine recorded landscape etchings, which were all made in about 1520-1. The subject of pure landscape was entirely new in the field of printmaking and Altdorfer's nine etchings seem to have been experimental. The print-run was small and it seems likely that the artist either gave or sold them directly to individuals rather than putting them on the open market. The practice of producing informal studies from nature was well-established, and although it is unclear that Altdorfer had seen Dürer's early landscape watercolours such as 44, he would certainly have been aware of how Dürer utilised such images in the background of his prints. It is also highly probable that Altdorfer was stimulated by Dürer's etching, 'Landscape with a Cannon' in 1518 ( 186) to experiment with an etching needle for the first time. His success in rendering a sense of airy atmosphere in his landscape etchings is quite unlike anything to be seen in Dürer's work. Altdorfer later used etching for producing ornament prints, which at this early date were known to appeal to a wider market.'
