- The identification of the sitter as Madame de Mouchy, first suggested in 'Catalogue manuscrit de l'oeuvre gravé de et après Charles Coypel', though now accepted by most scholars, has been questioned (see Thierry Lefrançois, 'Charles Coypel 1694-1752', Paris 1994, cat. No. P235). An Italian print engraved after the same portrait in 1766 wrongly identifies the sitter as the Marquess of Pompadour (Xavier Salmon, 'Madame de Pompadour et les arts', Paris 2002, p.507).
This print was issued as a black and white facsimile by the British Museum in 'Reproductions of Prints in the British Museum', New Series Part XI (Specimens of Line-engraving by French Masters of the Eighteenth Century), Published by the Trustees in 1902, where it was number III and described there as 'Pierre-Louis Surugue, after Coypel. Portrait of Madame de Mouchy in ball dress.'; see 1902,0820.2.4 (Shelfmark 245*.b.25).
