- Description
-
Parcel-gilded silver pepper pot in the form of a statuette of Hercules wrestling with the giant Antaeus, mounted on a hollow pedestal that would have contained the spice. The statuette is solid-cast with parcel gilding. The hollow pedestal or socle incorporates a pepperpot mechanism in its base. Hercules is depicted with curly hair and a beard but no moustache: his club stands behind the figures as a support, and Antaeus’s right foot rests on the head of Ge which emerges from the ground. There is gilding on areas of the socle, the head of Ge, the club and the hair of both figures. The pedestal is a truncated cone with marked profiling: at the top and bottom it is encircled by gilded concave bands. The basal disc is a single piece recessed in the centre with a turning catch and two circular holes. Perforations on the inner plate are in two groups of five small holes.
