  • Curator's comments

Schoch dates the printing of the second edition to about 1540. However, the typeface of the lettering here suggests a date closer to the first edition of 1515, so it is more likely that this was printed circa 1515-1520 than 1540.

See G.Bartrum, ' Dürer and his Legacy' exhibition catalogue, London, British Museum, 2002, chapter 11 for Dürer's drawing for this woodcut, and related prints.
