- Curator's comments
- This engraving was catalogued by Hind among a group of miscellaneous north Italian prints from about 1460-1500. It is attributable to the same hand of Hind E.III.53 (P&D 1857-4-11-4); Zucker (in 'The Illustrated Bartsch, Commentary', vol. 24, part 3, 2000, p. 252) suggested on the basis of size and shape that both were possibly engraved on either side of the same plate.
Characterised by parallel shading it seems almost certainly to be Paduan, and the subject would also indicate this too since the city was a popular place of pilgrimage because St Anthony was buried there. Several figures are reverse copies after ones in Dürer's 'Small Passion' woodcut series (for a fuller discussion of the issue see M.J .Zucker, 'The Illustrated Bartsch, Commentary', vol. 24, part 3, 2000, p. 254, no. 026).
Another impression of the print is in Berlin.
