M.D.LXV" in lower left corner, with "P.Perret.fec.79." further to the right; "Cum Privilegio" at lower right "QUI SINE PECCATO EST VESTRUM, PRIMUS IN ILLAM LAPIDEM MITTAT. Ioan.8." in lower margin, and below "Antverpiae apud Petrum de Iode."
  • Curator's comments

    Based on a grisaille painting by Bruegel dated 1565 in the Courtauld; the plate dates to ten years after Bruegel's death. For intepretive problems with this work, see D. Freedberg, 'The Prints of Pieter Bruegel the Elder,' Tokyo, 1989, p.53 ff.
