Money and Medals Network

The Network (in its current form) was established in 2012, following on from a looser association between the larger numismatic collections and numismatic societies formed in the mid-1990s. It is co-ordinated from the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum and led by a steering group drawn from network partners from around the regions, as well as representatives from the Royal Numismatic Society and the British Numismatic Society. 

While some elements of the Network's programme (especially online learning) are organised on a national basis, the Network is organised into a number of regional sub-networks, which can provide mutual advice and support within each region, as well as facilitate face-to-face training sessions.

The Network aims to facilitate dialogue and debate around research methodologies, interpretation, display and learning programmes. Network partners include museums, historic houses and universities, with collections ranging from a handful to many thousands of coins.

The work of the Network is supported by a part-time project officer based at the University of Warwick, with funding from the Royal Numismatic Society and the British Numismatic Society. The current project officer is Campbell Orchard, and he is responsible for managing the Network's programme and outputs, as well as providing a first point of contact for the Network. 

• Act as an information exchange for curators within the UK whose collections include coins, medals and other objects relating to monetary and economic history and numismatics.
• Provide information on best practice, new research and news items relating to the understanding, care, and public access of those collections.
• Encourage and facilitate collaborative ventures between the curators of those collections and to nurture links between those curators and individuals outside museums with an interest in related subject areas.
• Make the broad case for the potential of those collections and the importance of numismatic expertise for bringing them effectively to a wide audience.
• Work to identify new and exciting ways in which those collections can be presented to the public.

The core work of the Network is currently funded by the British Numismatic Society and the Royal Numismatic Society, while the Newsletter receives additional support from the British Art Medal Society and the British Numismatic Trade Association.

The Network has also received financial support at various points from Arts Council England, the UK Numismatic Trust and the British Museum's Partnership UK programme (which receives funding from the Vivmar Foundation).
