Armlet made of ivory, with people decoration

Visit resource:   Benin

The Kingdom of Benin was founded about 1,000 years ago, and was situated in the south-west of Nigeria in Africa.

Benin grew in power and wealth during the 15th and 16th centuries. The British Museum has a number of objects from this time, including some of the plaques which decorated the royal palace, home to the oba (ruler) of Benin.

This resource helps teachers plan a visit to the Benin section of the Africa gallery, and includes activities for before, during and after your visit.
