Biography: An archtect best known as an exponent of the Gothic revival, he was articled in 1847 to the neo-classical architect T.L. Donaldson and in the same year joined the Architectural Association as a founder member, becoming honorary secretary in 1850-51. He was heavily influenced by reading John Ruskin's, 'Seven Lamps of architecture' and throughout his long career maintained that Gothic was the only true Christian art, 'most scientific and beautiful, and most in accord with common sense'. His practice flourished in the 1860s and early 1870s. Significant secular designs included University College, Aberystwyth but he was essentially an ecclesiastical architect and he built churches at Chigwell Row in Essex, Great Yarmouth (St James's 1869-78) Ullenhall, Warwichshire, Ayot St Peter, Herfordshire (c. 1874-5) and Hoarwithy, Herefordshire .(1872-85). He also restored many medieval churches, designed numerous church fittings and was a designer of stained glass and mosaic. He wrote many articles on architecture and gave frequent lectures.
