- Biography
- Collector. Born at Sandowne, Isle of Wight. Worked in the City of London from c.1828. Collector of coins and antiquities from childhood. Member of the Royal Numismatic Society (q.v.) from 1837, Honorary Secretary from 1841, awarded the first RNS medal in 1883. Co-founder of the British Archaeological Association. His publications include numerous papers on archaeology and numismatics, 'Collectanea Antiqua' (1843-1880); also a 3-volume autobiography, 'Retrospections, Personal and Archaeological'. Retired to Strood in 1855 to devote himself to numismatic, antiquarian, literary and horticultural pursuits.
