Biography: The American philanthropist Edward Stephen Harkness founded the Pilgrim Trust in 1930 with an endowment of just over two million pounds. He desired that the gift should be used to promote the well-being of Great Britain with grants towards some of the country's more urgent needs. The focus of the trustees remains assistance with social welfare projects, preservation of buildings and countryside, and the promotion of art and learning. The British Museum has received grants towards acquisitions from 1959 onwards, and for the cataloguing of the collection from 2012.
