David Le Marchand

Life dates: 1674-1726
Biography: Native of the port of Dieppe, France. Left France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) ended toleration of the Protestant faith and is first recorded in Britain, in Edinburgh, where he was granted permission to open a shop in 1696. A master of the art of ivory carving, he worked first for Scottish aristocrats, both Loyalist and Jacobite. Later he moved to London where his patrons ranged from the Royal family and the Court to Whig intellectuals and Huguenot businessmen. He died in poverty in London in 1726.
