Sir Gore Ouseley, 1st Baronet

Biography: From an Irish family; made a baronet in 1808. Appointed His Britannic Majesty's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at the Court of Persia from 1810-1814 and accompanied by his older brother the Orientalist Sir William Ouseley (q.v.) who served as his private secretary. He was awarded the Imperial Order of the Lion and Sun by Fath 'Ali Shah in January 1812. The two brothers formed separate major collections of Oriental manuscripts. Sir Gore Ouseley's collection were at one time divided but are now mostly reunited in the Bodleian in the 'Ouseley Additions' and 'Elliott' MSS. Before presenting them to the British Museum, his Persepolis sculptures were displayed "upon the staircase of his house" according to 'The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register for British India', vol. II (1816), p. 384. The journey made by the Ouseley brothers is detailed in the account by Sir Wiiliam Ouseley, 'Travels in Various Countries of the East; more particularly Persia', London, 1819 (v. I), 1821 (v. II), 1823 (vol. III).
