Biography: A large group of Athenian black-figure vase-painters whose names are unknown, whose work is derived from Lydos (q.v.). Beazley called them the Tyrrhenian Group, naming them after the destination (on the west coast of Italy) for which their vases seemed to have been designed. They were mostly ovoid neck amphoras with decoration divided into friezes, the top one figured (decorated with a variety of scenes of daily life or myth) and the lower two usually filled with processing animals. Colour was freely used, especially in the figured scenes and letters scattered about, some spelling out proper inscription but others sheer nonsense.
