Biography: Athenian black-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley called him the Priam Painter, naming him after his representation of the unfortunate king of Troy on a vase in Madrid. He specialised in decorating large pots (amphoras and hydriai). He showed originality in composition and design, especially in mythological subjects. Many vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style.
