The Marlay Painter

Biography: Athenian red-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley called him the Marlay Painter naming him after the former owner of a krater now in Cambridge. He mostly painted cups, often decorating them with images of symposia, but occasionally also painted larger vessels. A large nubmer of vases have been attributed to him on the basis of style.
