The Leningrad Painter

Biography: Athenian red-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley called him the Leningrad Painter naming him after one of his vases in Leningrad (St Petersburg). As one of the Earlier Mannerists (q.v.), he decorated pots with somewhat elongated figures and lingering archaic patterning in the drapery. A very large number of vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style.
