Biography: An early Athenian black-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley called him the KY Painter because he was one of the leading painters in the group that Beazley (following Payne NC 194-201) designated 'the Komast Group' (q.v.) naming it after one of their favourite subjects: komasts (revellers) of a special type borrowed from Corinth. Many vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style.
