The Euphiletos Painter

Biography: Athenian black-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley called him the Euphiletos Painter naming him after the 'kalos' name he inscribed on one of the Panathenaic vases he painted to contain the oil that was given as a prize to the victors in the Panathenaic games. He decorated a variety of pot shapes and produced particularly fine Panathenaic amphoras. Many vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style.
